The Maldon Research Centre is located in the former Maldon Shire Hall building. It contains a considerable collection of records for the Maldon District which are useful for family and district research.
Film & fiche readers/printers and scanners are available. All staff are volunteers, and all income goes to improving the resources.
Maldon historical research can be broken down into two categories family or district research (All prices quoted are in AU$).
Maldon District family history
Our records are based on names and dates, so to start you need to know the name and occupation, or approximate birth year of your family member(s), so you don’t amalgamate information on the wrong family member, or even the wrong family!!
You may research the records yourself for $5 per hour, using our self-help sheets with or without the assistance of the duty volunteer.
Copies of paper records are 50c per sheet and of film records, 80 cents per sheet. If you can’t attend, the Centre will research for a charge of up to $40, depending on how much background information you can supply on dates, district addresses, occupations and the like, and how many copies of original documents are involved. The research results are emailed or posted to you as documents.
If you don’t have names and approximate birth years, the Centre is able to research these for you so you know who to look for in the local records. To start the search, we need the birth name of a family member born before 1921, their approximate birth year and location. The search can usually be done in a week, and the charge is up to $25, depending on how much starting information you can supply. The research results are emailed or posted to you as documents. A free alternative may be to join a free internet history mailing list, such as the Rootsweb Goldfields Mailing List at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/AUS/AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS.html and ask other Listmembers to “look-up” some family members for you, which they may or may not do, depending on how busy they are, and perhaps what you may be able to offer in return research.

Researching district history
Please note that Maldon did not have street numbers until the 1960’s, and most of the Tarrangower Times articles and the photographic collection are yet to be indexed, so research takes some time!!
